The Sonic Perfect System Collection is my take on the definitive way to experience the Sonic the Hedgehog series.

Ideal for beginners and longtime fans alike, the Perfect System Collection offers an easy to follow guide to obtaining what I feel are the ideal versions of over 30 years worth of Sonic games. Inside are recommendations for a slew of mods, quality of life tweaks, custom ports, and more. You'll also find 'Bonus Game' recommendations, covering games with a singular overhaul mod, and fangames on par with the 'real' stuff.

Now updated for 2025...
Sonic Perfect System Collection: BLACK LABEL.

This guide is best viewed in Adobe Acrobat, Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. Firefox does not currently support some of the layer effects used.

The Perfect System guide is available in two versions: a perfomance version and full-scale version. The full-scale version may be slow to load on some PCs, and so the performance version offers slight image compression to combat this.

Because I've been asked about it to the point of it getting old - the Sonic Perfect System guide is not actually an objectively perfect way to play Sonic games. As that flavour text up there states - it's my personal take on an ideal Sonic 'collection'.

You should probably experience these games vanilla first. I can't really imagine someone's first run of something like Sonic Frontiers being with Tracker Physics; while it's not 'a completely different game' as some would suggest, it's still significant. The name 'Perfect System' is simply a nod to Thunder Force V: Perfect System, the - ironically, pretty crap - PS1 port of Thunder Force V. I just like the name!

The only reason I've not been stronger with a disclaimer like this in the past is that, for example... if one of my close friends was going to play Sonic Adventure, and this friend was probably going to play it once and never again? Sure, I'd give them the Perfect System guide so they had as good a time as possible. It's an approach I've had with other games, too - I enjoyed Phantasy Star II greatly, but I was using an EXP hack on my first run. I don't think that diminishes my enjoyment in any way though (especially when SEGA's officially shipped several of those games with EXP hacks at this point).

At the end of the day, this stuff's subjective - if your 'Perfect System' is different to mine, that's rad. If your 'Perfect System' is to play the games as-is, that's also cool. This is just one way, that people have happened to like, which is nice for me at least.
